The neutron star is part of the X-ray binary star system known as 4U 1820−30, located in the constellation Sagittarius towards the center of our galaxy. Although only a few thousand such stars have been discovered, they are the densest objects in the Universe. This neutron star is only 12 kilometers in diameter, but has a mass of 1.4 times the mass of the Sun and is located 26,000 light-years from Earth.
The neutron star’s intense gravity pulls material from its companion, an Earth-sized white dwarf that completes an orbit of the neutron star in 11 minutes. When enough material accumulates on the surface of a neutron star, powerful thermonuclear explosions occur that can make the star 100,000 times brighter than the Sun.
