Speaking at a press conference after the negotiations of Russia and the United States in Riad, Rubio said that the sanctions became a consequence of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. “To stop any conflict, it is necessary for all parties to make concessions,” added the head of the State Department (appointment through the Guardian).
He recalled that, in addition to the United States, “there are other parts that imposed sanctions” against Russia. “At some point, the European Union will have to sit at the negotiating table, since it also imposed sanctions,” said Rubio.
According to him, talking about which agreements will lead to the agreement is still early. Finding a solution that is fair, stable and acceptable to all parties is one of the main “current interaction” tasks, concluded the Secretary of State.
- On February 18, Russia and the United States conducted the first negotiations since the beginning of the Special Russian military operation in Ukraine. The delegations meeting took place in the capital of Saudi Arabia, Er-riyad.
- From Russia, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and President Yuri Ushakov’s assistant participated in the negotiations. The US delegation was presented by Rubio, Mike Waltz’s presidential advisor and the special supervisor in the Middle East, Steve Witkoff.
- During the meeting, the parties, in particular, agreed to restore the number of diplomatic embassies in Moscow and Washington.
