The Brazilian Technical Standards Association (ABNT) launched a new technical standard on Wednesday (26). A big step towards digital accessibility. This is “17060:2022 – Accessibility in mobile device applications – Requirements” prepared by the Brazilian Accessibility Committee in partnership with CGI.br, the Internet Steering Committee in Brazil.

NBR 17060 is the result of a two-year project with the collaboration of more than 90 experts in the field. The standard covers native apps, hybrid apps, web apps, and mobile sites on Android and iOS, and Help over 17 million Brazilians with some form of disability.

How is the NBR 17060?

The new technical standard, WCAG (Portuguese Web Content Accessibility Guidelines), consists of 54 requirements and recommendations based on a set of guidelines for web content accessibility created by the W3C consortium. In the ABNT version, they are divided into four groups: 1) perception and understanding; 2) control and interaction; 3) media; and 4) coding.

In addition, NBR 17060 is the first standard for digital accessibility that adds non-textual elements such as control and interaction, subtitles, touch interaction, size of the touchpad, and description of buttons.

ABNT/CE coordinator Reinaldo Ferraz explains that accessibility has become paramount during the pandemic. No accessibility in an app, disabled people could not press the button To “buy food, search for a vehicle, make a medical appointment or book a hotel”.
