The series finale of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” explained

In 2005 the film Mr. and Mrs. Smith, played with the idea of ​​a potentially destructive secret between a married couple. But it wasn’t just the idea of ​​lying that ruined a bad marriage. Additionally, two rival spy agencies, each working separately, ended up pitting them against each other in a fight to the death. Spearheaded by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, who ended up falling in love on set, the idea was a big hit. The television version of the film, released by Prime Video, largely follows this story. But he also expertly uses most of his screen time to tell the story of what happens in the middle of a marriage in which the only certainty is murder. In this case, John (played by Donald Glover) and Jane (Maya Erskine from blue-eyed samurai)they know that being together is part of a larger purpose.

Hired by the HiHi agency, about which little is known, they have to deal with coexistence. Both are smart and skilled, so their abilities reinforce each other. In the midst of all this, romance arises. organic, natural and sustainable way. But contrary to what one might think, this does not help them complete their mission.

In the first episodes, the agents receive their first assignment, which also requires them to set boundaries so that any feelings do not affect the work. Francesca Sloan’s script made a smart decision to highlight the differences between them. John takes orders, while Jane is more commanding, efficient, and determined to accomplish what needs to be done. Something that will be important to understand their behavior, when they both realize they have no idea who actually hired them or their intentions.

An ambiguous ending to a series full of mysteries

As the chapters progress, it becomes increasingly difficult to bear a clear awareness of who is sending them to gather information or kill. Much more so when meeting other Smiths, this time older and more experienced. Old men Jane (Parker Posey) and John (Wagner Moura) make it clear that the agency will not allow them to escape. Moreover, under no circumstances will they be able to stop the company from sadistically controlling them.

One method is to put pressure on the main agents, played by Glover and Erskine, to kill each other. What they achieve is by encouraging Jane’s desire to move up the corporate ladder and fueling her ambition. This, at the same time, makes her believe that John is cheating on her and that he, of course, plans to kill her at the slightest carelessness. The series features an ingenious collection of traps that involve the couple having to choose between killing each other or killing both of them. Which becomes more obvious in the final chapters.

This leads to the final game, which ends production for now. After failing several missions, John considers leaving, and Jane is tasked with killing him. But in the end, she realizes that she is in love and that the possibility of a future is much more solid and real for her than continuing to kill on an opaque mission. However, when they both decide to run away, the HiHi Agency uses its trump card up its sleeve. This is nothing more than sending the eldest Smith couple to exterminate them.

Facing a more violent version of your work

The confrontation between the couples ends with the main Smiths ending up in the house’s panic room while Old Jane tries to open the vault and shoot them. Glover’s John is badly wounded and quickly bleeding out, but he still has the time and strength to confess his feelings. Erskine’s Jane listens to him, admits hers, and the two engage in a conversation that pushes their working relationship to the breaking point. They have the same real names and she decides to confront Old Jane to try to stay alive.

The series ends with the sound of gunfire, but it is not shown who survived and who died. In a post-credits scene, Harris (Paul Dano) walks through the remains of a house that was not killed in the collision, implying that the body was not found. But this means there is no indication of what happened to any of the four agents. Is the door open for a second season? We will have to wait.
