Apple plans to turn Mac computers into gaming powerhouses of the future. In addition to Game Mode, macOS Sonoma will have a tool that will allow developers to move games from Windows to Mac easily.
There are several platforms such as Wine and Crossover that convert application programming interfaces (APIs) from Windows to Mac. Despite everything, Apple announced that it will deploy similar solutions directly to the system.
Called the Game Porting Tool, Apple’s migration tool will help developers run games on Mac with “little or no effort.” However, more PC games will officially be coming to Apple computers.
Curiously, migration software is based on open source Wine platform. So the main functionality would be to translate Windows programs to Unix environments (like macOS and Linux).
Especially, The tool will be able to translate Microsoft’s DirectX 12 APIs to Apple’s Metal 3. For the uninitiated, DirectX is a Windows and Xbox console-specific format used to render graphics and sound in games.
Ports with few code changes
According to Apple, With the use of Game Porting Tool tools, some games can be ported to Macs without code changes.. Also, native versions for macOS may offer performance improvements.
Moreover, macOS Sonoma SDK will help developers take advantage of native system features like HDR video and spatial audio. With this, Maçã only encourages the production of titles without ports of Windows versions.
Even Apple claims Game Mode will prioritize in-game experiencesuses more of the machine’s CPU and GPU for more stable frame rates. Together, there will be support for control consoles and Bluetooth latency will be reduced for AirPods.
