The head of Sberbank, German Gref, announced his intention to create an alternative to the card operator Mir, the National Payment Card System (NPCS). However, there are no concrete plans yet.
Gref, in an interview with RBC, suggested several scenarios for the development of events: “it would be nice if NSPK changed its status or sold to market participants, or, in the end, another market player appeared”. He stressed that this would allow the quality of services to be compared and influence pricing.
German Gref added that Sberbank is unlikely to be able to create a payment system on its own, this requires the consent of market participants and the consent of the state.
- Sberbank’s annual net profit in 2022 fell 4.5 times. At the end of last year, the bank made a profit of 270.5 billion rubles against 1.24 trillion rubles in 2021. Sberbank director German Gref called 2022 the most difficult year for the banking sector. According to Gref’s expectations, Russia’s GDP growth rate in 2023 will be close to zero and inflation will reach 5-6% by the end of the year.
