Determined to catch the error in action, Jones booted Linux an astonishing 292,612 times and made another 1,000 boot attempts specifically to confirm the error.

Surprisingly, it took “only” 21 hours to complete this overwhelming task. Jones found that the error is less common on Intel hardware compared to AMD-based machines.

Jones traced the problem to a regression in the printk time function. Undoing a certain code fix fixed the issue, effectively fixing the bug.
