These formations are found in the Trabouc underground cave system near Les Mas-Soubeirands, the largest network of connected underground cavities in Cévennes. The study of the caves began in the 1820s, and earlier it was believed that their length was about 3-5 km, but now experts are sure that the length of the caves is 10 km. In the old days, the caves were used as a shelter for tribucar robbers, camisards of the Reformation era, and other people.
Historical research has led researchers to “One Hundred Thousand Solats”. These formations are composed of 95% calcite and 5% clay. Their elongated analogues can be called stalagmites, but the “soldiers” do not have overhanging outgrowths like stalactites.
So far, the mystery of this phenomenon has not been solved.
