The application of a bacteriophage mixture gave the film made of polyurethane-based synthetic material developed by Russian researchers the ability to effectively decontaminate severe burns.
In debilitated patients with extensive burn surfaces, the bacteria can cause inflammation and sepsis, often leading to death. In addition, some bacteria in the hospital have developed resistance to many and sometimes all antibiotics, says one of the filmmakers, head of the bacteriological laboratory of the Research Institute of Preventive Medicine at the Volga Research Medical University clinic.
To help deal with such bacteria, as devised by scientists, bacteriophages – viruses that infect bacterial cells – are invoked. Preparations based on them deliberately destroy pathogenic bacteria and are sometimes almost the only way to combat pathogens.
During a series of experiments, doctors demonstrated and proved that the polyurethane film absorbs the cocktail applied to it well and ensures the long-term viability of bacteriophages. Thus, the film helps to destroy harmful microflora in the wound, even from bacteria that are completely resistant to antibiotics.
