Teens didn’t just copy the 2008 hacks, they developed them. Fifteen years ago, a group of MIT students planned to talk about the free ride method on the Boston subway, but was sued by the MBTA. But the youth of 2023 did not face such problems.
They’ve created a portable “terminal” that can add any amount to CharlieCard or change its settings, and they’ve developed an Android app that can add trips with a single tap.
Despite their discovery, MBTA has not threatened to sue them or try to hinder their performance at Defcon. Instead, the transportation department invited them to a presentation on the vulnerabilities found.
