One of the largest meteorites ever found in Michigan served as a simple door stop on a local farm for a long time. This 10 kg space rock was discovered by experts only 80 years after its first discovery.
David Mazurek of Grand Rapids, Michigan brought the stone for examination, and geologist Mona Sirbescu of Central Michigan University immediately knew something special was in front of her. “This is the most precious specimen I’ve ever held in my hands,” she said.
The history of this meteorite began in the 1930s, when the previous owner of the farm and his father saw a meteorite fall on their land.
The next morning they found the crater and excavated the still-warm meteorite. When Mazurek bought the farm in 1988, the story was told to him and he was given the meteorite as part of the deal.
Mazurek eventually sold the meteorite to the Abrams Planetarium at Michigan State University for $75,000.
