This “smart rust” is a cheap, non-toxic and easily recyclable material.

The researchers emphasize that it can be used to remove various contaminants from water. The technology is based on iron oxide nanoparticles coated with a layer of phosphorous acid.

Attached to this layer are molecules that can interact with certain types of pollutants.

One of the key advantages of this technology is its ability to attract nanoparticles with a magnet. This makes the process of getting them out of the water much easier.

After the water is purified, the nanoparticles can be reused, making it environmentally friendly and cost-effective.
