Ritter explained that the US military initially believed that the first line of defense should be broken, but expressed concern that US Chief of Staff Mark Milley did not fully understand the situation. He described it as a “big trap” for Ukrainians.
According to Ritter, the Russian military wants to attack them in order to weaken the Ukrainian Armed Forces during the attack on the first line of defense. After that, the Russian troops will withdraw to the second line, withdraw the Ukrainian forces to a certain area, where they will be surrounded and subjected to massive bombardment, which will lead to their destruction.
Ritter stressed that any possible advance on the first line of defense would mean the implementation of Russia’s defense strategy, not a victory for Ukraine. He stated that the American command did not understand this.
