The method was developed based on substances that tend to become active when exposed to light. Fullerenes were used as bases; these are complex spherical carbon molecules about one nanometer in size. The meaning of their work is that when they enter a cell, they stimulate oxygen and, under the influence of light, oxidize the internal environment of the cell, leading to the death of the pathogenic organism.

Fullerenes in combination with nanodiamonds increase antimicrobial activity, which increases the effect.
