As noted by the Bolshoy Obzorsky Telegram channel, Greta Gerwig’s film “Barbie” was released in several Moscow cinemas.

In addition, the film is in the official programming of cinemas in more than 30 Russian cities. Christopher Nolan’s biopic Oppenheimer was also released in dozens of cinemas in Russia.

Some cinemas present foreign releases as a service prior to the screening of national films. For example, in several cinemas “Oppenheimer” will be shown for 3 hours before the 6-minute short “Dubak”.

In early August 2023, State Duma Deputy Chairman Vladislav Davankov approached Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin with a proposal to conduct an experiment on compulsory licensing of films from “hostile countries.”

According to RBC, the Ministry of Culture refused to release the films “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” by introducing compulsory licenses, noting that the films did not meet the goals of “preserving and strengthening traditional Russian spiritual values.”
