He worked as a software developer and joined Forethink, where he played a key role in creating PowerPoint. The program was released in 1987, and Microsoft acquired Forethink shortly thereafter.

Robert Gaskins, another co-author of PowerPoint, acknowledged Austin’s important role and said that Austin provided many of the key ideas for the program’s design. Despite being a staple presentation tool for more than three decades, PowerPoint has been criticized by the likes of Jeff Bezos and Steve Jobs.

But it remains an integral part of the Microsoft office suite. In recent years, Microsoft has expanded its capabilities by incorporating artificial intelligence features into PowerPoint.

Dennis Austin’s contributions have left an indelible mark on the technology world.
