Yandex.Browser was taught to create subtitles for Russian videos and streams using a built-in neural network, Yandex said in a statement.
The new feature can be tested on any website: from video hosting and social networks to TV channel pages and videos uploaded to cloud storage.
Typically, you can enable subtitles in a website’s video player only if the owner of the web resource or the author of the video has provided this option. Yandex.Browser is reported to remove this restriction when watching Russian videos.
The company has introduced a feature for when you need to be quiet and you don’t have headphones on hand, or when the room is too noisy. Additionally, automatic subtitle generation will help the hearing impaired to watch videos comfortably.
By developing the functionality, Yandex specialists were able to significantly reduce the amount of RAM on the user’s computer, which is consumed when generating subtitles.
The original version of the neural network used 800 megabytes and put too much pressure on the computer’s computing resources. After optimization, memory consumption was reduced to 150 megabytes. This allows you to start the neural network immediately in the browser, and even regular underpowered PCs can perform the task.
Subtitle generation works in Yandex.Browser for Windows and Linux. They promise to introduce the new feature to macOS at the end of September. You can adjust the font size and change the background transparency so that the subtitles don’t blend into the image.
