The Rossiya airline cannot obtain permission to fly to Georgia, writes Newsgeorgia with reference to the country’s Civil Aviation Agency. Tbilisi has already twice refused to allow the airline to operate flights, due to Western sanctions against some Russian airlines.
In spring, Vladimir Putin signed decrees to abolish the visa regime for Georgian citizens from May 15 and lift the ban on direct flights to this country. The flight restriction has been in effect since 2019. Georgia’s Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development expected an additional $300 to $400 million a year from the resumption of air traffic.
As the department explained, the first refusal to Russia occurred in May, it was about the Moscow-Tbilisi-Moscow flight. For the second time, on September 14, the company was unable to operate Moscow-Tbilisi-Moscow flights; Moscow—Batumi—Moscow and St. Petersburg—Tbilisi—St. Petersburg.
Previously on the Sheremetyevo airport website it was reported that Rossiya Airlines will begin operating flights to Tbilisi on October 14.
It was noted that the company will operate two flights per day. Rossiya also promised flights to Batumi three times a week.
