Scientists from the Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNIPU) have developed a new air cooling technology that can improve the operation of gas turbine units (GTU) and increase their efficiency.

Gas turbines are used to produce energy, and one of the important parameters of their efficiency is the efficiency factor. High ambient temperatures, especially in hot climates, can reduce this rate. To combat this problem, scientists have proposed using adiabatic cooling, which means cooling the air without losing heat.

Adiabatic cooling can be achieved by spraying water into the air stream. But to avoid problems with the formation of wet dust, which can increase hydraulic resistance and reduce the efficiency of the installation, scientists have proposed a way to completely evaporate the water in the irrigation chamber using dry air.

This new technology could help reduce the negative impact of high temperatures on the operation of gas turbines and make turbines more efficient. The results of the research were published in the journal “Mathematical Methods in Technologies and Engineering” and were carried out with the support of Gazprom Dobycha Orenburg.
