Amazon has entered a competitive path with SpaceX: the company has successfully launched satellite prototypes into orbit to create its own broadband network, Project Kuiper. The project foresees the launch into orbit of a total of more than 3,000 satellites.
United Launch Alliance (ULA) launched a rocket carrying two prototype broadband satellites from Amazon’s Kuiper project into orbit. ULA announced the successful launch on its website and the launch was streamed on the company’s YouTube channel.
The Atlas V launch vehicle will carry Kuipersat-1 and Kuipersat-2 into low Earth orbit. The mission of the satellites will be to collect data in orbit. Once the mission is completed, the spacecraft will be removed from orbit.
Amazon intends to launch the first production Kuiper satellites in early 2024.
Kuiper is set to compete with Elon Musk’s SpaceX network of Starlink satellites. As part of the project, Amazon plans to launch more than 3.2 thousand satellites and invest $10 billion in creating infrastructure by 2030.
