In a bid to improve the safety of the sport, world rugby’s governing body World Rugby has announced it will begin using mouth guards equipped with smart technology capable of detecting high levels of acceleration and head impacts in real time.

Data from smart mouthguards will be immediately sent to on-field doctors, allowing a quick decision to be made on whether a player needs to be suspended for a detailed check after a hard hit during a match.

World Rugby’s interest in mouth guards grew after research in ice hockey found that mouth guards not only protected against dental injuries, but also reduced the risk of concussion by 20%.

The new technology will debut later this month at the WXV women’s international professional rugby competition.

World Rugby is making an initial investment of €2 million (approx. US$2.12 million) to support rugby unions, competitions and clubs to pave the way for widespread adoption of the new smart mouthguard technology provided by Prevent Biometrics. The American company has been developing mouthguards for many years, so its introduction to World Rugby is a notable event.

Dr Eanna Falvey, World Rugby’s chief medical officer, said: “The latest scientific research and expert opinion tells us one thing: reduce the forces players experience overhead at all levels of the game. “That’s exactly what we do.”

Falvey added: “Advances in smart mouth guards mean elite players will be looked after better than ever. “We are bringing smart mouth guards from the realm of medical research into the world of daily performance management to continue to manage player well-being in the best possible way.”
