Forget about crowded theme parks like Disneyland or LEGOLAND. There are tons of cool, weird, and unique theme parks to take advantage of. If you grew up watching Flintstone or you have a child (or inner child) who really loves dinosaurs, a park in Arizona will transport you before the stone age. Find out how to explore the streets of Piedradura with your family.

Flintstones theme parks

There were several theme parks in the US that brought the Hanna-Barbera show to life.

  • Bedrock City in Custer, South Dakota

Opened in 1966, the theme park was a South Dakota staple until new owners decided to close it in 2015. The park reopened in 2019, but without the classic Los Angeles characters. Flintstoneand was renamed Buffalo Ridge Campground Resort.

  • The Carowinds in Charlotte, North Carolina

The Carowinds opened in 1973 and operated The Land of Hanna-Barbera until the 1990s.

Canada has tried to capture the magic of Hanna-Barbera over the years with several theme parks, and even Warner Bros. World in Abu Dhabi has a Bedrock themed area.

The Flintstones theme park continues to evolve

In old times

Opened in 1972 to build on the success of the South Dakota park, the original plan called for a movie theater to house continuous shows, a restaurant, a gift shop and attractions. The miniature train carried people around the park, which must have been great.

Unfortunately, the architect passed away, and instead of closing the park, his widow kept it open. However, in 2015, he wanted to sell the place and retire, but fortunately decided not to. The park was closed for part of 2019 and was not expected to reopen by 2020.

The park is open year round which is great and only closes for Thanksgiving and Christmas. It opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 7 p.m. or sunset and costs $10 to enter.
