The Bank of Russia will present a 1,000 ruble banknote with an updated design in 2024 after public criticism. This was announced by the head of the regulator, Elvira Nabiullina, and her words were reported by Vedomosti.

The design of the banknote after its release came under widespread criticism from the public, Orthodox activists and the Russian Orthodox Church. The dome of the Kremlin palace church was depicted without a cross, while the Syuyumbike tower was depicted with a crescent.

After criticism, the Central Bank suspended the issuance of the updated banknote and promised to finalize the design. The regulator clarified that the bill did not have wide circulation.

The Central Bank introduced updated banknotes in denominations of 1,000 and 5,000 rubles on October 16. They have a reinforced protective complex, landmarks of federal districts were used in the design.
