Google announced this Wednesday (08): Brazilian version of search engine gets productive Artificial Intelligence (AI) functions. In this way, users now receive contextual information, more detailed explanations about the topics researched and discover new perspectives.

This functionality, called Search Generative Experience (SGE) or Productive Search Experience in Portuguese, was already available in countries such as the United States and is gradually reaching Brazilian Portuguese as of today. According to Google executive Bruno Possas, the aim of the new feature is to simplify people’s experience on the internet by offering more natural and intuitive searches.

“SGE will help people perform multiple searches in one search. In other words, it will not be necessary to go on an entire journey to gain a broader understanding of a topic, as a single search will show a more comprehensive explanation of the topics,” he noted.

Abstracts that SGE displays on Google are accompanied by reference links. In the results pages, the source of the explanations is indicated and the original sites containing the source can be accessed in full.

And as well as the text on the topic under investigation, people can even access a chatbot that explains other details about the topic they’re interested in. In the style of ChatGPT, the conversational AI system answers other questions and points out more resources.

Although it is now available to everyone, the system is still in the testing phase. “With every survey, we get feedback that if the result is bad, it’s thumbs down, if the result is good, it’s thumbs down. We want to understand what works and improve the tool,” Possas said.

What kinds of questions can be asked about Google’s GGE?

HE SGE practically works by the same rules as Google’s traditional search engine. In other words, pages that are already indexed to appear in search appear in SGE format.

For example, a person might search for “how to join the women’s football team.” On a question like this, the generative AI summary mode will answer about the materials required to play the sport and that the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) defines that you must be at least 16 years old to play the sport professionally. .

In conversation mode, SGE can provide more complete answers to questions such as “What are the characteristics of women’s football?” Check out the screenshots of the examples below.

Bruno Possas pointed out that a special protocol is being developed for the artificial intelligence service. After he’s ready, Content producers and website owners will be able to request SGE to de-index pages, but keep them in traditional Google and vice versa. It is not possible for you to make this choice right now.

“Responses to surveys conducted on ESG are not exactly the same as the text on websites because AI rewrites quotes. For this reason, the links are shown to verify the information and so that the person can check it himself,” he said.

The Google representative also added that SGE even shows replies on social media. As is already the case with Google search, posts from Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter) and other platforms are indexed in the AI service and may appear as sources of answers to some questions.

What types of searches are not answered by Google’s SGE?

Google’s SGE does not display replies on topics considered sensitive, such as explicit sex, health, and politics.

Although he talked about themes, Possas acknowledged that it was possible for specific topics to emerge within these themes. He noted that it’s not possible to tell exactly which directions the tool won’t show, it varies from call to call, and most things are automatic.

“Additionally, if the user searches for something highly realistic on a highly sensitive topic like medicine, no AI results should be shown because we understand that a productive experience is not conducive. [para responder a este tipo de coisa]”, added.

With a more concrete example, A person seeking a diagnosis of a disease through SGE should not receive a complete answer.

Before providing a text in response, the Google tool verifies information on at least three different websites. In this sense, it is possible to evaluate, for example, whether the answer is correct or not and whether the site is reliable.

“The current experience is not necessarily the experience that will be released to users later. We are testing and we will learn from people’s use,” Possas emphasized.

Does SGE run from Google Bard?

Although it offers suggested questions and conversation mode, Google SGE not working from Google Bard. In fact, the platforms are independent.

Bruno Possas explained that the tools use different language models and are also trained in their own way.

“SGE is a product of the Google search engine. It is involved in verifying the information presented and providing qualified traffic to websites. Meanwhile, the Bard performs a more creative function, so to speak. “For example, it is more suitable for tasks such as writing e-mails,” he said.

GoogleBard

Posses suggested that users could use SGE and Bard in a complementary way. The former is a complement to the search engine, while the latter is almost a personal assistant for school, work and leisure tasks.

How to access productive AI searches on Google?

To start the trial version of SGE, you need to access the labs.google.com/Search website using the desktop version of Google Chrome.. All use of the new tool will be handled by Search Labs, a new platform where people can test and experience new Google technologies.

SGE will also be available in the Google app for iOS and Android devices in the coming weeks. For now, the service does not have an expected arrival date for other browsers.
