Apple will allow installation of applications in Europe bypassing the App Store early next year, Bloomberg writes.
Users can download apps directly from developer sites and save them without using the App Store. This will allow developers to avoid paying Apple’s 15-30% commission.
This feature will probably appear in iOS 17.3 or 17.4. The publication notes that Apple will tightly control this mechanism.
Last July, the European Parliament used the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which obliges Apple to allow the installation of applications on the iPhone from any source. It came into force on November 1, 2022.
Apple opposes this law, but it rewards it for it because if it loses, it can be fined 20% of global revenue. [Bloomberg]
