Apple has updated its legal documentation to indicate that the company requires appropriate action in the United States when Apple ID information is received via push notification service.

Cupertino residents will provide them with push notification metadata, device type and model, time data, software version, mail user, and so on. And only at the request of the court.

In a section titled “Information Available from Apple,” the company stated:

When users allow an installed app to receive push notifications, an Apple Push Notification Service (APN) token is subsequently issued and registered with that developer and phone. Apps can have multiple APN tokens per account on the same device to separate messages and media.

The Apple ID associated with a registered APN token may be obtained through a lawsuit or a longer legal procedure.

When push notifications are enabled, Apple and Google generate a small piece of data (a token). It links the device user with information about the accounts they have with companies, such as name and email address.

Reuters says this data was used to connect anonymous messenger users using Apple or Google accounts.
