On your day off, I suggest you remember what interesting and important things happened during this work week in order to keep abreast of what is happening in the world of gadgets and technology, and also discuss this news with friends.
Below we have collected all the most interesting things over the past six days, what was written about and discussed on the pages of iPhones.ru.
This week we looked at a new domestic smartphone with its own unique operating system, comparable to the Moscow and Toronto metro, which online tested Apple’s new troubleshooting service, complex ways to record telephone conversations on the iPhone and dealt with the new downgrade of iOS 17.3, which may do a service. really “bearish” service.
Read about this and much more in our digest:
1. New service for diagnosing problems in iPhone from Apple.
As part of its self-repair program, Apple launched Apple Diagnostics, a self-repair service. It allows you to do a self-check for iPhone problems starting with iPhone 12. This iPhone must be running iOS 17 or later.
A second device will be required to perform diagnostics. This could be a Mac, iPad or iPhone. They must have iOS 13, iPadOS 13, macOS Catalina 10.15 or later software installed.
The service is not available in Russia, but we tested it and told you how to check the operation of your iPhone using the new Apple service. Display, battery, Face ID and more.
2. We record telephone conversations on iPhone in different ways.
Some developers from the App Store provide applications for recording phone conversations. Some applications do not perform their functions, some require a subscription fee for service.
At the same time, recording conversations on an iPhone without jailbreak is very difficult. Most often, you need to do a few preliminary steps before talking, but this does not guarantee that everything will work. We recommend not to waste time on this application, but to use proven methods collected in one material.
Use it.
3. We looked at the Russian smartphone R-FON with the Rosa Mobile operating system.
The device received a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution (1080×2412 pixels) and 394 ppi pixel backlight. The performance is driven by an 8-core MediaTek Helio G99 processor with a 6nm processor, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal memory.
The main reason for the new product was the Rosa Mobile operating system. It is built on Linux with a focus on user privacy.
Opinions were divided in the comments. Some readers think that this is a breakthrough, while others are dissatisfied with the blatant copying of a Chinese device with unstable top-end characteristics. Come and express your opinion, too.
4. News from our readers from Canada. What the metro looks like and the experience of communicating with the Apple service
It’s always interesting to see how they live in other countries. So one of our regular readers delights with his important posts about life in a distant life.
Look what the metro looks like in Toronto and compare it with Moscow. The author found 10 differences, there is nothing even to object to.
And a person’s iPhone 15 Pro Max broke down literally a month from the date of purchase. You can learn about your experience of communicating with Apple technical support and service center in this material. Spoiler: everything is not so polite and customer-orientedas I would like.
5. Which iPhone is best to buy at the end of 2023. There are 8 successful models
It’s time to choose the most desired gift for the New Year holidays – a new iPhone. This year the situation is quite simple: there are frankly unsuccessful models that are outdated or new iPhones that spoil older models with the same price. If you throw away such smartphones, it will lead to a choice of several features for any wallet.
We compared both current and discontinued iPhones that you can take. A separate change to a model that is not worth buying for various reasons.
See the full guide here. If you are interested in buying an Apple iPad, here is the same guide on Apple tablets. And at this link we deal with poppies and MacBooks.
6. Why the new iOS 17.3 “Stolen Device Protection” feature is dangerous
The first beta version of iOS 17.3 introduced a new feature: Stolen Device Protection. This mode is enabled both during the initial setup of the iPhone and after updating the firmware. Apple listened to many years of requests from security experts – and added this protection tool to iOS, in addition to the already existing Lockdown mode.
But there is one thing in the mode that is worth keeping in mind before activating it: in unforeseen circumstances, you will lose some of the data on the device and lose access to a number of key functions, even if you did not lose your iPhone. And also create a burden of inconvenience for yourself.
Do not activate Stolen Device Protection until you read this material.
7. Why support for MacBooks running on Intel chips will end in 2025
Three years ago, Apple first introduced and promptly released the first MacBook powered by M1 processors. Everyone knows what happened next.
The announcement shook up not only the foundations of Apple laptop owners, but also the gadget market as a whole. After such a breakthrough, only one question remains: how many years do Intel-powered Macs have left before they are forced into history?
They told why the coming year 2024 and the next version of macOS became the last for all MacBooks on an Intel processor. Everything is laid out on the shelves, it’s interesting to read.
8. Various interesting things
📍 A giant archive of old iPhone games was found on the Internet.
X users accidentally discovered a huge number of old mobile games and applications in the Wayback Machine (web archive) that were never released on the App Store. Among them are unreleased versions of Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, Temple Run, and the game Obamagram.
The leak was named TestFlight Teralikbecause the total size of installation files is 1.2 TB.
📍We found a solution to the problem with Face ID not working on the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
This looks like nonsense or trolling, but in fact it absolutely works: Face ID magically recovers after hitting the table and correctly recognizes the face, as before.
If you want to do the same with a personal iPhone suffering from Face ID problems, be sure to first put a case on the device with permanent sides around the display. Otherwise, fix Face ID, but you will break the screen.
📍We watched the film “Wonka” (2023), which became a meme in Russia because of the logo, and share our impressions.
In short, Wonka is the perfect movie to create a New Year’s mood, the celebration of which it has nothing to do with. Here, from the very beginning, a deep belief in miracles and the whole magical atmosphere of the local universe was implanted in the viewer.
For more details, see here. An overabundance of absurdity and flying candies with giraffe milk for everyone!
📍 The characteristics and design of the Samsung Galaxy S24 were revealed a month before the presentation.
There will be three models in total: Galaxy S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra.
The S24 will have a 6.2-inch screen, the S24+ will have a 6.7-inch screen, and the S24 Ultra will have a 6.8-inch screen. All displays are made using AMOLED technology with a maximum brightness of 2600 nits.
There is even more insider data in the news; on January 17 at 21:00 Moscow time there will be an official presentation of the devices.
📍We watched episode 8, “The Boy’s Word.” We discuss how the series ended without spoilers.
On December 21, the online cinema Wink welcomed the eighth episode of the series. Several events have happened recently. Demo versions of the seventh and eighth episodes were leaked online, and against this backdrop, rumors arose that because of this final act they decided to reshoot.
At first the authors refused, the actors also supported this conclusion. However, then the creators of the game still proved that they were not completing the filming of Episode 8, and decided to completely remake it.
How the ending of the most popular film project of this year turned out is discussed in this material.
That’s what this week was like. Enjoy your holiday and see you in the next Sunday digest.
