The Bank of Russia has named the most popular phrases of telephone scammers, after which you can stop talking and hang up. Attackers often pose as department employees and send fake IDs through messengers and use social engineering methods.

The Central Bank named the most popular phrases of telephone scammers

The most common phrases of scammers:

  • “A loan application has been submitted.” The regulator recommends hanging up if the loan application has not been submitted;
  • “Central Bank employee.” Central Bank employees do not contact individuals to carry out banking transactions;
  • “Special and secure account.” Criminals offer to transfer money to a certain “special account” for safekeeping, but such accounts do not exist, the report states;
  • “Investigative actions are being carried out to help stop scammers and not reveal information.” Law enforcement agencies do not carry out procedural actions by telephone and do not offer to participate in the arrest of fraudsters;
  • “They are trying to steal your money, a suspicious transaction has been recorded.” Banks may suspend such transactions without customer participation;
  • “The SIM card is about to expire.” A SIM card from a mobile operator has no expiration date;
  • “It says the code from the SMS message.” The code is analogous to a handwritten signature: it cannot be sent or communicated, the Central Bank emphasizes;
  • “He is being harassed by a financial security specialist, a bank security officer.” In this case, the fraudster will be interested in the card details or the SMS code.

In the third quarter, the amount of money stolen by fraudsters from clients of Russian banks amounted to 12.4 thousand rubles. This is the minimum value since 2021.

According to analysts, the decrease in the average amount of stolen funds is due, firstly, to the efforts of banks to prevent telephone fraud using social engineering techniques and, secondly, to the fact that citizens are increasingly less sensitive to phone calls.
