Research firm PitchBook has released venture capital investment statistics for 2023. According to the company, it was the worst year for Silicon Valley startups since 2019 and the worst year for the world as a whole since 2017.

Venture capital investments in startups in 2023 decreased by 35%

Figures from a report cited by Bloomberg show that in 2023:

  • venture capital firms invested $170.6 billion in the United States (approximately 15,000 transactions),
  • In total, investors poured $345.7 billion into startups worldwide (down 35% from last year).
  • The average transaction value in the US decreased by 30% compared to 2022,
  • The volume of funds raised by venture funds decreased by two-thirds in the United States (to $66.9 billion) and by half worldwide (to $160.9 billion).

The only exception to the rule are Latin American venture capital companies. In this region, even as the average cost of investment deals fell, fundraising rose 40% to $2 billion.
