Fish serve as both predators and prey in ocean ecosystems. Thousands of animal species, including humans, eat fish. In fact, studies have shown that some plants get 70% of their nitrogen needs from salmon dying on or near river banks. In humans, fish and other seafood are an important source of protein for approximately 3 billion people.

It turns out that fish is more than just food. In coral reef ecosystems, herbivorous fish control the growth of algae by constantly eating it. Without their help, algae would grow rapidly and smother the corals.

Without fish, the Earth would slowly lose its beautiful white sand beaches, coral reef ecosystems would be covered in algae, and many people would have nothing to eat.
