In the investigation initiated by the department upon the complaint of 12 drivers who stated that there was a sudden loss of steering power in Tesla electric cars of the specified models, it was revealed that the problems in component quality also affected the suspension. NHTSA is currently aware of 2,338 complaints regarding suspension and mostly steering; Some Tesla owners report being unable to turn the steering wheel, while others note the increased effort required.

NHTSA is also aware of 50 vehicles towed due to faulty steering or suspension.

In this context, it was decided to strengthen Tesla’s investigation and give the case the status of engineering analysis; This was a necessary step before the agency could request a recall of electric vehicles.
