Security researcher Noah Roskin-Frazee, who helped Apple find Wi-Fi vulnerabilities, was accused of fraud and defrauded the company out of $3 million.
Although not directly transferred to Apple in court documents (it is listed as “Company A”), it can be identified by data criteria. She resides in Cupertino, California. In total, Frazee and his accomplice stole $2.5 million worth of Apple gift cards and goods with a total value of more than $100 thousand.
In 2019, Frazee and his post used a password reset tool to gain access to the accounts of an employee responsible for an unnamed “Company B,” which handles Apple customer support. This account gave them access to additional employee credentials, and Frazee gained access to Company B’s VPN servers. From there, Frazee was able to log into Apple’s system, placing fraudulent orders for customers’ equipment.
He used Toolbox, which was used to edit orders after they were placed. The scammer changed the value of orders to zero, added other products to orders and extended AppleCare insurance. All of this suffered between January and March 2019.
Frazee was charged with mail fraud, conspiracy to commit bank and mail fraud, conspiracy to commit computer fraud, and intent to damage a protected computer. He will be stripped of all stolen goods and could be sentenced to more than 20 years in prison.
