Microsoft is considering selling Apple’s Bing search engine in 2018, according to court documents in the Google monopoly case in the US.
In 2018, Microsoft approached Apple with a story about improving the quality of Bing search. But in reality, Microsoft’s goal was either to sell Apple’s search engine or create a joint venture related to Bing.
Apple didn’t like the idea because Bing’s search quality was worse than Google’s.
The quality of Microsoft’s search, their investment in search, all of this has failed completely. That’s why everything was worse. So the definition of quality itself wasn’t that good. They haven’t invested at the level of Google or what Microsoft can invest. Their advertising organization and monetization methods were also not very good.
Eddie Cue, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Internet Services.
Negotiations in 2018 came to nothing. In 2020, Microsoft again approached Apple about buying it from Bing, but was rejected.
In addition, Microsoft has suggested that Apple make Bing the default search engine in Safari at least seven times: in 2009, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2020 versions. [CNBC]
