Although AT&T said it found no evidence of direct data theft from its systems, it deployed cybersecurity experts to investigate the source of the leak. As a precaution, all affected customers had their codes automatically reset.
AT&T encourages customers to be careful and monitor their account activity and credit reports closely. The data breach appears to span data from 2019 or earlier and includes information from both current (7.6 million) and former customers (65.4 million). Financial information appears to be missing from the leak, but details such as full names, email addresses and dates of birth are available.
The source of the leak remains unclear. AT&T does not know whether the data breach occurred on its own systems or through a third-party vendor.
