The Paramount+ streaming service released an unusual new product – the mini-series “Gentlemen in Moscow” starring Ewan McGregor.

The series is a film adaptation of the same novel by Amor Tulza. He also became the showrunner of the project. The book by the financier-writer almost immediately became a bestseller in the United States and was translated into 35 languages.

We have already watched the new film, analyzed the first episode and are ready to share our impressions. How do Americans support Russian people?

By the way, the project has positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes

There were no special revelations here; there was a place for cranberries, but nothing critical.

The era after the October Revolution

What is the series about?: Count Alexander Rostov, played by Ewan McGregor, is sent into lifelong exile in 1921. But not in Siberia or the Gulag, which did not exist yet, but in the Metropol Hotel. There he is forced to spend time for the rest of his life.

Having not lasted even 100 days at the expense of the state, the occupational safety graph works as a waiter and does an excellent job, since he is well versed in food and drinks, has good manners and knows foreign languages, although he has never worked before.

It was no coincidence that the authors included a temporary passage. The time of the next restructuring and changes in society after the October Revolution, when the Bolsheviks came to power. The original novel explored other periods of life in Russia, including World War II, but the first episodes focused only on 1921.

The creators contributed to the transfer of the spirit of the past era through the scenery and numerous dialogues, regional repressions by the Bolsheviks. At a time when a person could be imprisoned for the wrong political views, “the article will already be found” ©.

Opinions differ even in high society. Some saw in Rostov’s written poem some kind of order and calls for revolution, while others saw inspiration to support the party spirit. As a result, a decision was made not to carry out the execution, but to include the count in the Metropol Hotel, depriving him of consequences and honors. However, it is believed that he is still at the expense of the state, and he is entitled to decent service in hotels. First, living with a pandemic in a maid’s quarters.

The keys, as I said above, xWatot. The project is not oversaturated for her, but it is present and is more present in people’s everyday lives. This is, first of all, the merit of the author of the original books. He wrote his work based on deep discussions in society and personal experience: Toles visited many establishments in Tsarist and Soviet Russia and communicated with guests who came across a similar link.

Despite many artistic assumptions, the film adaptation fits well with the spirit of the era. But we couldn’t make the mistakes typical of modern cinema. For example, viewers who saw the trailer immediately noted the presence of black actors. Personally, I have no complaints about this, and at that time there really were similar characters, but how stupid it is to see them with Russian names. For example, an obvious Indian hairdresser named Yaroslav in one of the scenes. Why, why the creators of the game decided to do this is unknown.

You often notice that fiction in history is superimposed on reality. Because of this slightly complex project, I take it seriously, but overall it’s exciting from the very first minutes.

“This is still my country”

One of the main characters of the first episode, revealing Rostov’s personality. A true patriot of his country, who loves it, no matter what, and does not want to leave it even after leaving.

Metropol itself arranges beautiful and graceful, but it doesn’t quite look like a real hotel. Like Moscow, it was clearly drawn in CGI, and it shows. Fortunately, the explosion occurs on the screen for only a couple of minutes, since the action takes place within the walls of the building.

Director Sam Miller skillfully showed and constantly followed all the hotel guests. Everywhere there are “agents”; already inside the hotels there are American funds and secret documents to control visitors and employees.

Such intrigue maintains tension and increases the viewer’s level of interest in what is happening. And not only with skillfully constructed scenery, but also with mysterious characters, among whom was the little girl Nina. No less mysterious, but so open.

You feel every side from every angle, in every nook and cranny..

The sections were the first to hear their opinions. Many moments remind and refer to modern Russia and other countries. Some even talk about a hidden allusion to the imprisonment of journalist Julianne Assange.

McGregor’s character says with his appearance that his imprisonment is just a phase. That he could be locked in the attic, but he would still be a part of his homeland and the consequences in its history.

A start

It’s too early to evaluate the series in any way, since only one episode has been released. But I am sure that “Gentlemen in Moscow” arouses genuine interest among many numbers, especially in Russia.

The first episode turned out to be interesting and extremely beautiful. But it was not without standard cliches and well-known genres. Nevertheless, we watch what is happening with curiosity, and even the minor characters here evoke a wide range of emotions. Just look at one childhood friend of Rostov.

Overall, it’s worth watching for now. And then we’ll see.
