To be honest, the last time I looked for a browser game was about 15 years ago on VKontakte. Recently I came across news about a fan transfer of classic games to the browser, and I wondered what the browser games market can offer in principle now?

In connection with this question, I went to a modern platform with browser games, chose five countries around the world and want to share with you all the best.

Spoiler: There is a lot to play here in 2024.

1. Tanki Online

And let’s start, perhaps, with the classics. This project has existed for many years and has experienced a global conversion. If you still associate Tanki Online with a simple browser game similar to Tanki on Dandy, then you are mistaken.

In its current state, the project is a stretch, but it has quite learned to hold its own against such giants as World of Tanks and War Thunder. Here you will find many modes, from regular team battle to a specific Siege, where you need to alternately capture and defend points on the map. There are also elements of progression – in order for you to still experience experience, you pump up ranks, and the tanks themselves can and should be developed too.

Tanki Online is one of the best representatives of the browser games market of high quality and gaming nature, characteristic of a large project. And this game can be played without installation, directly in any browser. If you’re looking for a couple of intense matches, I recommend giving it a try. You will not regret.

2. Paint

There is an interesting online shooter on Nintendo consoles called Splatoon. His main task is not just to collect the maximum number of “frgs”, but also to paint the entire map with the color of his team. This unique mechanic is rarely replicated in other games.

The Mosu Games team tried to create a simple but fun browser game based on these mechanics. The game has two teams armed with paint guns. The goal is to paint over as many cards as possible to highlight your color. You can also shoot paint at your opponents to temporarily take them out of the game and reduce their team’s effectiveness.

The game makes progress, but it’s not very deep. You can change the appearance of your character and even your weapon before the match. However, all this is not free, but is sold for in-game currency; you need to actively earn it. But is all this really necessary for a couple of sessions a day? I’m not sure.

3. Military brokers

Do you love the Battlefield series? I used to love too, but that’s not about it now. While searching for interesting games for this article, I found one thing that for a few minutes took me back to those moments when I was actively playing Battle.

Despite the style, which is reminiscent of Minecraft, this is a full-fledged online shooter with infantry and even vehicles. Of course, the scale here is decreasing, only 15 people, but I understand that this is a browser project. But it has 17 types of weapons, helicopters, planes, ground vehicles and many interesting modes. From the classic “Capture the Flag” to “Royal Rumble”.

Honestly, with all my bias towards any online shooters, the word “Call of Duty” is missing from the title (I’m not ashamed), War Brokers was able to surprise and even draw me in. The graphics here are simple but stylistically attractive. The shooting, of course, does not live up to any shooter, but it is fun to shoot, especially with shotguns. And yes, all this in the browser on any device. For free.

4. League of Angels: Legacy

But today our selection includes not only shooters. If you want something more meditative, but not a critical strategy game where you just press a button and collect resources, then I suggest trying your hand at the MMORPG genre. Yes, there are such games too, and they can be browser-based.

League of Angels is a whole series of games, the last part of which was released not so long ago. The plot is not so important here, it is a fantasy level about the struggle between good and evil. But the technological process requires more attention. First, you will need to choose the main elements in battle – fire or ice. After this, you will immediately find yourself in the thick of things.

The combat system here is made in the idle format (automatic combat, in layman’s terms). You can achieve success in events by choosing skills, equipment and companion. All this is achieved in the same way as usual in this genre – through grinding (performing monotonous tasks). But since the battles are automatic, grinding here is quite enjoyable, especially if you put the game on in the background and do other things at the same time.

League of Angels: Legacy is a dynamically developing project, there is always something happening here. The developers create events with achievements; in addition to the standard destruction of monsters, you can also try yourself in battles against other players. There is also a pleasing design of female characters, but without the typical anime style.

5. Heroes of Might and Magic 3

Of course, this project is unofficial and still in beta testing. However, it is already fully playable and you can select an army and start the game. Moreover, you can even play with friends, as before, on the same computer.

The game runs great, the maps are completely playable and have no major issues. However, if you are using Google Chrome with dark theme, half of the texture may be whitened. Therefore, it is better to choose a different browser for games. By the way, another team of enthusiasts is now transferring the first Diablo to browser rails, but so far everything is at the concept stage. We are waiting for the final result.

Browser games are not dead

To be honest, when I started writing this article, I had a stereotype in my head that browser games are not very good and not worthwhile entertainment.

But I was wrong.
