In the spring of 2022, scientists conducted a survey of more than 4,300 adults in the United States over three weeks. About 3,300 of them admitted to drinking alcohol in the past year, and about 1,800 placed sports bets in the previous year.

Study results showed that those who bet on sports were 1.9 times more likely to report binge drinking (defined as five or more drinks on one occasion for men and four or more drinks on one occasion for women). And this is true in comparison with those who do not bet at all or who do not bet, but do not bet on sports events.

The study confirms the link between substance abuse and sports betting reported in previous scientific articles.
