The use of a soft metal mesh implant makes it possible to more effectively restore the functions of the larynx after complex operations or a long stay on artificial ventilation. This method is less traumatic for patients and promotes faster rehabilitation, the press service noted.

According to Evgeniy Topolnitsky, professor of the Siberian State Medical University, laryngeal defects can occur as a result of injuries, burns, as well as long-term use of artificial ventilation. They cause breathing difficulties, voice changes and other problems. Previously recommended treatments were often ineffective or caused complications.

Scientists from TSU have developed a special implant made of metal mesh fabric that facilitates the growth of replacement tissues and protects against displacement in the early postoperative period. The new method has already been successfully tested in practice and has received positive feedback from doctors. This discovery has become one of the most important directions in the development of medical science at Tomsk University, the press service added.
