As part of the new study, scientists combined data from 16 papers published between 2000 and 2023. More than 500 thousand people from six countries participated in these studies. They were followed for two to five years. Participants ranged in age from 35 to 60 and approximately 60% were women.

According to the results of the analysis, experts found that sleeping less than seven hours a night was associated with a 7% increase in the likelihood of developing hypertension. This risk increases to 11 percent in those who sleep less than five hours a night.

Women who slept less than seven hours were 7% more likely to have high blood pressure than men.

Sleeping more than eight hours was also associated with an increased risk of hypertension, but this was not statistically significant.
