A recently released wonderful series based on the Fallout series of games, bringing back into fashion the theme of survival in a post-apocalyptic world.

But what if you have already completed all the parts?Folycha“and want something new? I’ve put together a list of five games for you that are worth trying first.

Here are the stories you can dive into all weekend:

1. Metro Exodus

When came out: 2017
About what: about the survival of a group of people in a nuclear wasteland.
Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Windows.

In the form in which I have given at the moment the entire part of the popular Metro series of games, but, in fact, I recommend trying the entire series. It seems to me that the first two games are too intimate and corridor-like. But in Exodus you can really appreciate the scale of the tragedy and get a stronger sense of the world after a devastating war.

The plot of the Metro series of games centers on an alternative history of our world. In 2013, a nuclear war occurred, which destroyed most of humanity and made the Earth practically uninhabitable. The first games in the series are about the survival of people in the Moscow metro, how society is being built anew and what difficulties it faces.

But Exodus has a history of settlement in several large regions in different countries, Russia and even Kazakhstan.

All levels in the game are well designed and have their own unique design. Each location has its own deep plot, attention to detail, sounds and atmosphere make this world truly attractive. It is very interesting to study the environment here, because it is so close to the heart of the Russian player.

If you’re looking for an atmospheric, moderately complex and intense shooter set in the backdrop of a dead homeland, and if you like heartfelt dialogue and characters, then Metro Exodus is an alternative choice. Even if you haven’t played voice acting in the game series.

2. Dying Light 2: Stay Human

When came out: 2022
About what: zombie apocalypse, parkour and constant fear of the dark.
Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Windows.

Again, I nominally recommend the second part. The duology very successfully combines interesting mechanics that dilute the zombie horror genre that is frankly frozen in time.

This game takes place in a fictional Middle Eastern metropolis called Harran. This city suddenly finds itself engulfed in a zombie virus epidemic. We play as different characters, but they are good in their mechanics – they are freerunners, parkour runners who are not afraid of heights or slowdowns.

For the player, fighting zombies and dizzying runs on the roof become commonplace. After all, escape and agility here are the key to survival. Especially at night, when the complexity and variety of opponents increases several times. The basis of the main combat system here is not firearms, but close combat, preferably using improvised means.

And also the Dying Light duology very beautiful. The views of the dead city are mesmerizing. Sometimes you want to go higher and enjoy the scenery. The series is not deprived of a plot, but, to be honest, it is not in the foreground here. In fact, the main thing here is the fast and fast-paced gameplay. It is for this reason that I recommend familiarizing yourself with the project.

3. Horizon: Zero Dawn

When came out: 2017
About what: about people who went back to almost the Stone Age, robot dinosaurs and the ancient history of the world.
Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows.

I can’t talk about post-apocalyptic games without mentioning the Horizon duology. I’ll admit, I’m not a big fan of modern Sony exclusives. But the storyline of Horizon, the lore of the lost world, captivated me so much that I threw away all my prejudices.

To say that this is exactly what happened in the game’s plot would immediately spoil one of the main plot twists. So let’s keep it short and to the point. Something happened in the world, because of which civilization rolled back in development far into the past, it is clearly visible that the future has arrived in this world and quite far away.

In our hands is the girl Aloy, whom I wrote about here by the way. A world filled with hostile tribes and dangerous robotic dinosaurs, as well as an insatiable desire to understand what happened here.

The world in Horizon is beautiful and mysterious. Why do people live like primitive tribes? What are high-tech underground structures? Where did robots even come from? Most of the attacks should be found on your own in a very beautiful and detailed open world.

4. Days gone by

When came out: 2019
About what: bikers, search for a wife and true male friendship in the scenery of a zombie apocalypse.
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Windows.

What would happen if people who hadn’t made a desktop game in a long time were inspired by The Walking Dead and Sons of Anarchy and the book World War Z and then made a game?

The result is Days Gone – an open-world action adventure starring bikers and hordes (no, hordes) of zombies as opponents.

wp-image-1253829wp-image-1253830wp-image-1253831

The key events came two years after a pandemic wiped out almost all of humanity and turned millions of others into “freaks”—mindless, zombie-like creatures. In the prologue, we see that the protagonist’s wife is mortally wounded by a corpse child. And as luck would have it, the scientist accompanying the rescue helicopter informs the hero that he has only two places, and besides Deacon (that’s our hero’s name) and his wife, his best friend is also standing next to him.

Deacon makes a choice, and we will deal with its consequences two years after these events.

The core of the gameplay remains two things: your motorcycle and your arsenal of weapons. First you ride in a world where every second every creature is fighting for its life, and yes, you do the same. And if everything is more or less clear with human enemies, then when I first saw a horde of living masses from “biomass”, I, frankly, was taken aback for a second.

For the sake of these sensations, excellent shooting and a cool story about bikers, I recommend trying Days Gone. The project is unique. There won’t be a second time like this.

5. Frostpunk

When came out: 2018
About what: how to save a small town in an icy hell and a person to stay.
Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Windows

And now, perhaps, one of the most morally complex games in a post-apocalyptic setting that exists at the moment has ended. Frostpunk is not just a game, it is a test of critical thinking and a test of the player’s moral compass.

It is a mixture of city building strategy and survival simulator. We control a group of survivors from different countries who are fleeing a terrible natural disaster in the Arctic in order to survive and build a new society. The player acts as the leader of this group.

Our main goal is to hold out as long as possible and survive the peak of the cataclysm, which will practically destroy the world. We are building a thermal generator, but without coal it will not be able to work. Coal needs to be mined, and once mined, there is somewhere to live, something to eat and, preferably, someone who has not died of frostbite. Well, don’t kill a friend of a friend.

wp-image-1253832wp-image-1253833wp-image-1253834

Temperatures will continue to drop, and soon our authorities will choose to spend heating: in the sawmill, which leads to the creation of resources, or in housing construction technologies, where these resources still exist. And by the way, not every family can afford to send a child to a 20-hour shift in a mine, and not every person will agree to eat soup made from sawdust to save food.

In my subjective opinion, this is one of the most grounded and morally complex games in the post-apocalyptic genre. She thought about how far we would go to survive.

And let the post-apocalypse be only in games

To be honest, in this format I would have told more, but the material was so swollen then Raider Corpse in the Wasteland. Therefore, I really hope that traditional games will be enough to satisfy the genre hunger after completing the Fallout series.

By the way, as always, I invite discussion in the comments! Tell me your examples of games in the setting of a lost world, scold me for the absence of The Last of Us on the list and share your impressions. Have a fun weekend to all of us.
