This change is consistent with Google’s internal “Material Design 3” design guidelines. ChromeOS is already actively implementing elements of Material 3, as evidenced by the recent redesign of the Settings app that mimics the design of Pixel phones.
While Google Sans will be the dominant font, there will be a few exceptions. So some symbols and signs are not yet available in Google Sans, which will create the need to use Roboto as a backup. Roboto is still available on devices running ChromeOS Flex, an option optimized for older hardware.
An update with the ability to change fonts is expected in version 126 of ChromeOS, which is planned to be released in June.
