The use of synthetic substances to combat mold often has negative consequences for the environment. However, a new method based on biogenic silver nanoparticles offers a safe and effective alternative. Scientists have managed to create an environmentally friendly and easily scalable drug thanks to the cells of the Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 bacterium.
The developed solution can be applied to exhibitions and monuments infected with fungi or inhabited by harmful microorganisms. It can also be used as a component for paints, varnishes and building materials, which makes it a universal tool for the preservation of cultural heritage, the press service noted.
Olga Zhuravleva, senior researcher at the Environmental Protection Biotechnologies Laboratory, states that the developed method has a number of advantages over traditional chemical methods. Not only is it safer for the environment, it is also easier to use and does not require large energy costs for production.
