Scientists want to know whether permafrost can be used to store strategic food supplies in case of emergencies. As part of the experiment, product samples will be stored in cryogenic storage for five years.
If the results are positive, a separate cryogenic storage facility will be built to store strategic food stock. The idea of using permafrost to preserve food is not new. In Soviet times, part of the strategic food reserve of the USSR was stored in galleries near Yakutsk.
Older residents of the city claim that meat that has been left in permafrost for 20-25 years retains its quality. Scientists hope that the new experiment will allow them to develop effective methods for long-term preservation of food in permafrost conditions.
This will create a reliable strategic food supply in case of natural disasters or other emergencies.
