So, this week Apple TV received the official port of RetroArch, a comprehensive collection of emulators. Previously, RetroArch was only available for download on iOS and tvOS through complex workarounds. Now users can easily download it from the App Store and download the ROM files through a browser connected to Apple TV.
Apple TV hardware offers faster performance than the Raspberry Pi 5, even on older first-generation models with the A10X chip. This allows it to support advanced video filters and higher resolution rendering for retro games. Additionally, tvOS supports a variety of Bluetooth gamepads, including the Nintendo Switch.
Although Apple TV is superior in terms of hardware and ease of use, it also has its limitations. Apple platforms do not support JIT code compilation, which limits emulation of “newer” consoles such as GameCube and PlayStation 2. Additionally, RetroArch’s interface can be cluttered as it lacks the user-friendly options available on the Raspberry Pi.
