It was previously known that atherosclerosis, which occurs with the accumulation of cholesterol in the walls of blood vessels, is associated with familial hypercholesterolemia, a hereditary disease. This disease is most often associated with defects in the LDL receptor gene.
Researchers have found that defects in this gene negatively affect the endothelial cells lining the inner surface of blood vessels. This offers new hope for choosing effective treatment for hypercholesterolemia, which currently achieves success in only a small percentage of cases, the press service noted.
