In the second half of 2021, BenQ launched the GV30 portable projector. This model has an original shape and an audio system with 2.1 channel sound, an important parameter for portable projectors that you take on the road.

BenQ’s website lists the detailed specifications of the GV30 portable projector. A short list of features is as follows:

Packaging and equipment

BenQ ships this projector in a white cardboard box.

There is not a lot of information about the package, so I suggest moving on to the package. Inside the box, the GV30 portable projector comes in a sturdy cloth case that can be used to transport the projector long distances. A handle is provided for easy transportation.

In addition to the projector, the kit includes: a bracket, a remote control, two power cables, a charging box and an AndroidTV module.

Appearance

The BenQ GV30 portable projector is shaped like a drop. The dimensions of the projector are quite compact and are 12 x 19.5 x 18.5 centimeters, and the weight does not exceed 1.6 kg.

Since this model is portable, a leather handle is provided to carry the projector over short distances.

The loop can carry not only the projector, but also the mount, as the mount has magnets, with the help of which the mount stays securely attached to the projector, even if the GV30 is shaken very strongly.

On the front of the projector are autofocus sensors and a keystone correction sensor, as well as an LED lamp with a lifespan of 20,000/30,000 hours (Normal/Eco mode). The projection ratio of BenQ GV30 is 1.2:1 BenQ GV30 is 1.2:1. The company’s website has an image indicating the optimal viewing distance and screen size. BenQ states: “Projection screen sizes can range from 30 to 120 inches,” depending on how close or far the projector is from the projected surface.

On the right side of the BenQ GV30 there is a cover that hides a seat for an AndroidTV module.

On the back of the projector, under the grille, there is an 8W subwoofer.

There are four icon control buttons on the top of the BenQ GV30 projector.

There is a mounting hole at the bottom of the projector to mount the GV30 portable projector on a tripod.

On the sides of the projector there are ventilation holes for cooling, as well as for speakers with a power of 4W each.

The connection ports are located on the left side of the projector:

  1. 1 x HDMI version 1.4

  2. 1x USB-C

  3. 1 x 3.5 headphone jack

  4. 1 plug for charging power supply.

The remote is made of plastic and feels monolithic in the hand, nothing will hold it together anywhere.

Software and remote control.

The main advantage of this projector is the work on AndroidTV.

The BenQ GV30 projector’s main menu screen is well structured. For the most popular applications, quick access is provided.

To download additional programs, the Google Play store and 16 GB of internal memory are provided.

The gear button on the remote gives you quick access to settings.

Button labeled Projector Menu: Allows you to access advanced picture and sound quality settings.

The button with the image of the house returns the user to the main screen and gives access to other applications.

On the remote there is a button with a triangle and a smile, which is responsible for children’s content on FamiLand (TV).

BenQ states: “FamiLand (TV) categorizes kids’ YouTube content into playlists by genre.” However, this selection is more suitable for children who are learning English. I did not find any content in Russian.

Image

The BenQ GV30 portable projector has a brightness of 300 ANSI lumens, which is enough in the dark, but during the day this brightness will not be enough. In the settings of the GV30, you can choose one of 6 picture modes (brightness) for comfortable use:

  1. Sparkly

  2. Living room

  3. The game

  4. Sport

  5. Cinema

  6. day time

As for the color reproduction, everything is fine here. The colors are bright, juicy and look natural. Unfortunately, the photos do not convey the full depth of color.

The maximum image resolution is 720P, which is not critical for a portable device, but I would like to see 1080P.

Sound

As mentioned above, sound is important for a portable projector, carrying around an additional audio system is extra weight that is not needed at all. The BenQ GV30 uses a 2.1 audio system with a total power of 16W. The projector also has five sound presets: standard, cinema, music, game and sports. The volume scale is rated up to 50. In a room of 18-20 square meters, a setting of 20-30 is enough, in the wild around 40 to block out ambient noise.

Drums

The BenQ GV30 is rated at 2.5 hours on a single battery charge, but in reality, it can safely achieve up to 3 hours of work.

view content

BenQ GV30 portable projector is preloaded with apps like YouTube and Amazon Prime, which is enough to use the projector. But to watch movies and series, you can install an online streaming service from Google Play, such as: IVI, OKKO, Kinopoisk, Premier and many others at your discretion. Also, you can use an external drive with a USB-C port to watch videos.

You can also transfer information to this projector from a mobile device that has built-in IOS and Android operating system. It turns out a wireless transmission with video and sound.

User experience and conclusion

For me, watching movies on a projector is, first of all, emotions and sensations like going to the cinema, which now, unfortunately, shows little interest. The BenQ GV30 portable projector gives you that experience, but it also makes watching movies more romantic. Invite the lady of the heart to nature in a tent, throw a sheet between two trees, light a fire and turn on a movie… Romance. If you want, this projector can be used as a bluetooth speaker, there is such a function, but how much you need it is up to you. In terms of ease of use, there are all the necessary connectors and connection methods. Yes, there is no usual USB-A port, but it is 2022 and this port is already obsolete and it is time to switch to USB-C, especially external SSDs, and HDDs have a cable with this port included. Regarding connecting the phone to the projector: As for me, the decision is quite controversial, since there is AndroidTV and the Google Play app store on board. It is better to distribute the Internet from the phone and connect the projector to the phone.

It is impossible not to notice the magnetic mount for the projector – it looks a little, but thought out by engineers. When transporting the projector, it does not fly away. It is also convenient to adjust the angle of the projector on it.

In terms of functionality and configuration, there is everything you need. Of the features, I highlight that this projector is not designed to be hung from the ceiling, even though I went up in the settings, I did not find that the image could be rotated 180 degrees. Still, the BenQ GV30 is a portable projector and is designed to be close to you on a tripod or on its native stand.

I have no complaints about the picture and sound quality. Everything, as it says in the characteristics, of course, I would like more and better, but the price would be higher. And if necessary, BenQ has a bigger brother GV30, its model is GS50. From the experience of use, I would not recommend watching too dark movies during the day, it will be difficult to get a good picture, in a dark room the picture is better, but someone may not have enough brightness. It is best to watch bright cartoons or TV shows, as well as good movies, where warm tones prevail.
