The ALOS-4 satellite is designed to collect Earth data for disaster response and mapping. It is also equipped with an infrared sensor developed by the Japanese Ministry of Defense to monitor military activities such as missile launches.

This is the third launch of the H3 rocket. The first flight in February 2024 was successful, but the first launch last year ended in failure; the rocket failed and its payload, the ALOS-3 satellite, was destroyed.

The new ALOS-4 satellite is a more advanced version of ALOS-2 and will operate alongside its predecessor.

The H3 rocket is intended to replace the current H-2A main rocket, which will be retired after the remaining two launches.
