The call for “clearer communication” came after the upper stage of a Chinese rocket separated earlier this month, sending more than 300 pieces of space debris into low Earth orbit.

While some progress has been made in US-China military dialogue this year, Whiting stressed that the incident highlighted China’s “need to disclose more information about space debris incidents.”

Whiting expressed concern about the frequency of space debris produced by Chinese launches, noting the Long March 6A rocket’s tendency to produce significant amounts of debris.
