Meta (an organization banned in the Russian Federation and recognized as extremist) announced its first augmented reality glasses. They are called Orion.

The company’s manufacturing of their hard materials has been around for a while now. The display features special MicroLED projectors inside the frame that project graphics in front of your eyes through waveguides in the lenses. They’re made of silicon carbide, not plastic or glass. The company chose silicon carbide because it’s tiny, lightweight, and has a super-high refractive index, allowing the light from the projectors to fill more of your field of view.

The device uses Meta AI generative AI technologies. They are combined with augmented reality and work in a subtle connection with it, this is a completely different level in the space with Meta Ray-Ban. The new glasses can be combined with each other for players of 3D games, projects, etc.

The hardware for Orion consists of three parts: the glasses themselves, a “neural bracelet” to control them, and a wireless “computing puck,” a large external battery for a smartphone. The gadget does not need a phone or laptop to work, but when removed from the “puck,” it becomes useless.

The field of view here reaches 70 degrees, which is more than in any analogues. AR glasses weigh 98 grams, which is more than in standard glasses. The frames are made of magnesium, which is easier to perceive and is used for uniform heat distribution.

You can control the glasses with an eye, hand, voice and neural ID bracelet that resembles a Fitbit without a screen. It is made of a composite material and uses electromyography (EMG) to measure neural signals that are connected to hand gestures.

For now, this is just a prototype. Meta Orion will not be sold to everyone. The company continues to work on improving the screen quality, reducing the overall cost (it is currently close to $10 thousand), optimizing the software, and much more. [The Verge]
