Documentary Money Electric: The Secret of Bitcoin from HBOdocumentary director Cullen Hoback (Question: In a storm2021, mini-series about conspiracy theories), claims that Satoshi Nakamoto, the man, woman or society behind Bitcoin— Canadian developer Peter Todd.

Although Todd denies that he is Nakamoto, the identity behind the pseudonym is crucial as the person or people behind the pseudonym are estimated to have 1.1 million Bitcoins, a fortune valued at approximately $70 billion.

Peter Todd is a renowned Canadian developer known for contributing to the development of Bitcoin Core, the core software for implementing the Bitcoin protocol. His contributions to blockchain date back to 2010, shortly after Nakamoto published the 2008 Bitcoin white paper, a document describing blockchain technology and the Bitcoin system.

According to CointelegraphIn 2008, when the Bitcoin white paper was published, Todd was 23 years old. The same publication claims that Todd said in a podcast published in 2015 that he was 15 years old when he began collaborating with Hal Finney, one of the first developers of the cryptocurrency concept. In January 2009, Finney became the first recipient of a transaction on the Bitcoin network. Finney died in 2014.

Why does Hoback think Todd is Nakamoto?

Hoback claims Nakamoto is Peter Todd, based on a series of purported pieces of evidence that reveal missteps on the part of the Canadian developer.

One such piece of evidence is a 2010 thread on the Bitcointalk forum in which Todd posts a message just over an hour after Nakamoto posted the message. Both messages are related, so Hoback argues that neglect shows a connection between one and the other.

“Hoback is grasping at straws” Todd said Coindesk days before the documentary premieres on HBO.

Cryptocurrency publication BitMEX Research also doubts that Todd is Nakamoto, and claims that such evidence is “patently ridiculous.”

In one of the videos distributed on social networks before the premiere of the documentary (now available on Max), Todd asserts in a satirical tone that he really is Nakamoto.

“It will be a lot of fun when you put this in a documentary and a lot of Bitcoiners see it,” Todd said. “I suspect a lot of them will be very happy for you to go down this route because it’s another example of how journalists are really missing the point, which is very funny.”

This is not the first time that the media has unsuccessfully attempted to reveal Nakamoto’s identity or identities. The list of names ranges from programmer Dorian Nakamoto to Australian computer scientist Craig Wright. And to this day the secret remains untouched.
